Open Alex and researcher profiles

OpenAlex is a free and open catalog of the global research system that is an index of scholarly works, authors, venues, institutions, and concepts.

Why use Open Alex for researcher profiles?

We use bibliographic metadata and affiliation data from OpenAlex to help power our novel matching system. OpenAlex is extensively used elsewhere at Overton in general. We are big fans of their data, core values and responsiveness.

In our tests we found OpenAlex data to be robust and (mostly) comprehensive. That said, working with scholarly metadata is messy and all databases have errors and omissions. OpenAlex is no exception. Where there are issues with author profiles or affiliations, the fix may involve talking to Open Alex directly. But rest assured, we are happy to help with this – contact us at support@overton.io.
